Art 101: Understanding Visual Art Forms in Our World is specifically designed for the novice seeking An Introduction to the visual arts, as well as current art-related issues. This text provides an opportunity for all to understand, enjoy and experience art.
Included are basic vocabulary, simple explanations of fundamental concepts, as well as descriptions and diagrams of materials, processes and techniques. Art theory and History are presented in a straightforward and accessible manner. Well-known works of art from around the world and across time are organized thematically and discussed in a chronological context. In order to deepen the reader’s understanding of the evolution of Artistic styles and Cultural trends, some themes are also discussed in a chronological context.
Art 101 includes a workbook that serves as a guide to analyzing and Writing about art. It includes exercises that guide students in looking at and understanding art, while introducing them to the visual elements and techniques artists use to communicate particular meanings to their audiences.
Interpretive techniques utilized by art Historians and critics that write about art are also included, as well as sample essays. Various writing exercises and worksheets guide students through museum and gallery visits, as they become more adept at evaluating exhibitions as well as individual works of art.
The workbook also contains useful tips for writing about art, such how to begin and organize a paper, as well as guidelines for a variety of expository writing including exhibition reviews, comparison essays and Research papers.

Kimberly Anderson has taught art appreciation and art history courses at various community colleges in Baltimore, MD for the past fifteen years. In addition to college teaching, she also taught art and art history to grades K–8 for the Baltimore Catholic school system, and served as chairperson for the committee that created the visual arts curriculum for the Archdiocese of Baltimore. Prior to this, she worked in the museum field in both Maryland and South Carolina. She received a BA from Columbia College, as well as an MA and a Graduate Certificate of Study in museum management from the University of South Carolina. Currently, she teaches a variety of art history courses at the Maryland Institute College of Art.
